Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the India women's cricket team across all three international formats, the senior batter announced on Tuesday. The 37-year-old led India to consecutive gold medals at the Asian Games and was at the helm when the team secured its first women’s global title at the ODI World Cup last year.
In a statement posted on social media, Kaur described the decision as difficult, reflecting on the many memories, emotions, and sacrifices associated with her tenure. “I have given everything I had to this team and to Indian women’s cricket—my blood, my sweat, my time, and many times, a part of my own game and personal ambitions,” she said.
Despite relinquishing the captaincy, Kaur confirmed her intention to remain an active player for the national side, emphasizing that while her role as captain ends, her journey in cricket will continue.
Kaur’s leadership has been widely credited with elevating India’s women's cricket profile, including guiding the team to its maiden ODI World Cup victory and back-to-back gold medals at the Asian Games. Her decision to step down marks the end of a notable chapter in Indian women’s cricket as the team prepares for upcoming international fixtures under new leadership.
