Harrogate Town secured a dominant 3-1 victory over Sutton United on Sunday, marking their fifth consecutive league win. Three goals within a five-minute span in the first half set the tone for the match at Wetherby Road, with Bailey Hobson, Josh Hmami, and substitute George Thomson all finding the net before halftime. Sutton managed a late consolation through Ben Brookes, but it was insufficient to threaten the Sulphurites’ lead.

Harrogate started strongly, quickly putting Sutton under pressure. At the 10-minute mark, Hobson linked up with Michael Craig to create an opportunity for Hmami, whose shot was deflected for a corner. Early efforts from Archie Baptiste and Hmami tested Sutton goalkeeper Spike Brits, reflecting Harrogate’s control of possession and territorial advantage.

Despite losing Will McGowan to injury in the 25th minute, Harrogate’s momentum remained undeterred. Thomson, who replaced McGowan, immediately made an impact by setting up Hobson for the opener. Two minutes later, Brad Dolaghan intercepted the ball, bypassed Brits, and assisted Hmami in scoring into an empty net. The visiting defense was breached again in the 35th minute when Ethan Bristow’s cross found Thomson, who calmly finished to extend the lead to three.

Sutton manager Chris Agutter acknowledged his team’s shortcomings during the first half. “Harrogate were everything we thought they would be,” he said. “Our press wasn’t right and we were probably a bit fortunate to go in at half-time only 3-0 down. We gave a couple of cheap goals away.”

Agutter responded by making three substitutions at halftime, introducing Bobby Amartey, Brandon Njoku, and Sam Folarin. The changes brought more composure to Sutton’s play, who increased their presence in the attacking third during the second half. While Harrogate remained composed and created chances— with Hmami going close and Craig firing wide — Sutton pulled a goal back in the 74th minute. Folarin’s pace shook the Harrogate defense, allowing him to find Brookes at the far post, who scored.

Sutton came close to further reducing the deficit, with Charlie Carter forcing a save from substitute goalkeeper Luke Hutchinson and Amartey narrowly missing the target. Harrogate manager Simon Weaver praised his team’s second-half performance, stating, “They had nothing to lose at 3-0, but everybody kept their shape well and we handled it, met it with pressure and were happy with our temperament.”

The match was attended by 2,415 spectators, with Josh Hmami earning recognition as Harrogate’s standout player for his contributions throughout the game.
