Trainer Harry Charlton is optimistic about the prospects of Wine Dark Sea as the four-year-old prepares to race at Newmarket on Friday. The horse recently delivered a commanding victory by 13 lengths in the Cumberland Plate Handicap at Carlisle two weeks ago. Due to the early closing of entries for the Betway Trophy, Wine Dark Sea will carry an 11-pound penalty in the upcoming £100,000 race.

Charlton noted that the timing of the entry closure coincided with the Carlisle win, which worked in their favor. Despite the horse’s 17-pound handicap increase following the impressive performance, the penalty addition for Friday’s race is comparatively lighter, offering a promising opportunity. The trainer highlighted plans to extend Wine Dark Sea’s racing distance up to a mile and six furlongs, although the horse has shown capability over shorter trips.

In addition to Wine Dark Sea, Charlton confirmed he will also run Hand Of God, who recently returned to form with a strong win at Newbury. The horse is set to compete in Saturday’s John Smith’s Cup at York, and Charlton described Hand Of God as being in “tremendous form.” Bookmakers have reacted to Wine Dark Sea’s form by offering odds as low as even money for the Betway Trophy, reflecting confidence in the contender’s chances.
