“Harry Potter: A Hogwarts Express Adventure” has debuted at the Southern California Railway Museum, offering an immersive theatrical experience based on the popular book and film series. The interactive attraction invites guests to board a reimagined Hogwarts Express train and engage with characters from the Wizarding World during a guided journey.
Visitors begin their experience by traveling through a recreated “Platform 9¾” before boarding the train. They are greeted by four actors portraying Hogwarts students, each representing one of the four Houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. These characters highlight the distinct traits traditionally associated with their Houses—courage, loyalty, wisdom, and ambition—and explore these themes throughout the ride.
As the train departs, the students embody their respective traits and reveal the House rivalries and camaraderie familiar to Harry Potter fans. Over the course of the journey, the narrative challenges each character to adopt a virtue from a different House, promoting a message of personal growth and unity. Key moments include encounters with magical creatures such as a hippogriff blocking the tracks, chocolate frogs that have escaped, and a climactic confrontation with a dementor, portrayed by a puppeteer in a hooded costume.
The experience integrates various technical elements to enhance storytelling. Television screens installed above the windows display scenes from the films, while specialized lighting effects simulate spellcasting and magical duels. Windows are covered with custom gray shades featuring the Hogwarts Express logo to maintain the immersive environment by preventing views of the outside world.
Passengers participate actively, particularly during the showdown with the dementor. Guided by the Hufflepuff student, visitors join in chanting the spell “Expecto Patronum,” triggering a coordinated light and sound sequence that signifies the creature’s defeat.
Upon disembarking, guests enter a themed area inspired by Hogsmeade, the fictional village adjacent to Hogwarts. Here, visitors can purchase food, drinks, and merchandise tied to the Harry Potter universe.
The attraction runs through September 27 at the Southern California Railway Museum, located in Perris, California, following a route that begins and ends at the venue while passing through surrounding neighborhoods. Trev Ireland, a representative of Rail Events, which operates the experience, emphasized the challenges involved in adapting theatrical technology to a moving train, including the innovative use of screens and lighting.
While Rail Events does not maintain a personal connection to J.K. Rowling, the original author of the Harry Potter series, the project has ties to Warner Bros., which holds the rights and also plans to release a new Harry Potter television series this Christmas.
Plans for future stops are expected to be announced in the fall, with intentions to expand the adventure across North America and eventually to the United Kingdom.
