The Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, California, has transformed into a temporary Platform 9 3⁄4 to host "Harry Potter: A Hogwarts Express Adventure," a unique theatrical event held aboard a moving train. The one-hour experience features interactive elements including singalongs, spellcasting, and cheers representing the four Hogwarts Houses. Ticket prices range from $72.25 to $93.25 per passenger.
The event, which began ticket sales before July 23, reportedly sold close to 11,000 tickets during the presale period. Organizers say this is the first Harry Potter-themed train event of its kind in the United States. Jarrette Ireland, vice president and general manager of Rail Events Inc., and Kathleen Wallis, vice president of global themed entertainment at Warner Bros. Discovery, highlighted the strong fan base drawn to the immersive experience.
However, the event is taking place amid renewed controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, who has faced ongoing criticism for her statements and actions perceived as hostile toward transgender individuals. Critics point to Rowling’s past comments and her financial support for organizations opposing the inclusion of transgender women.
Local activists in Perris have called for a boycott of the event, urging the public to refrain from purchasing tickets or any related Harry Potter merchandise. Ashley Williamson, lead director of R.I.S.E. Perris Pride and a nonbinary individual who identifies under the transgender umbrella, emphasized concerns about the broader implications of supporting Rowling’s work. Williamson expressed fear that proceeds from such events contribute to efforts that undermine trans rights, noting personal experiences with anti-queer harassment in the Perris community.
“It’s already very scary being openly queer in Perris,” Williamson said, referencing incidents of hateful slurs and property vandalism targeting LGBTQ+ individuals and families.
In response to these concerns, Wallis acknowledged the deep affection many fans have for the Harry Potter stories, including younger generations who grew up with the franchise. She characterized the events as celebrations for fans to engage with the narratives in new and enjoyable ways.
Warner Bros. Discovery has not issued a statement addressing the local protests or the controversy surrounding Rowling’s views. The production continues to operate under the company’s broader entertainment division.
