Harry Styles has spoken about how a former relationship helped him overcome his anxiety about being out in public, allowing him to navigate daily life without the need for heavy security. The former One Direction member revealed that during the height of his early fame, he often felt unsafe walking around London, his adopted hometown.

In a recent interview with Thom Yorke, frontman of Radiohead, Styles described how a past girlfriend’s outgoing nature encouraged him to face his fears. He recalled that when he was in the band, much of his experience felt confined, noting that hotel stays often left him feeling “locked-in” and wary of venturing outside. “When I’d be home, it felt like, ‘Oh, it’s not safe for me to be out’,” he said.

Styles explained that his partner’s visit to London presented a turning point. Concerned that staying indoors might appear reclusive, they decided to walk around the city together. This simple act helped him realize that it was possible to be outside without fear, an epiphany that profoundly changed his outlook. “It kind of broke that thing,” he said, “because it’s how you stay connected to the world.”

Yorke, who encountered Styles walking freely in the streets of Rome, expressed admiration for the singer’s choice to forgo constant security presence. “I was impressed that you were just walking down the street,” Yorke said, recalling his surprise and questioning whether the decision to walk unguarded was conscious. He acknowledged the difficulty of such a choice, noting he himself has faced moments of vulnerability in public life.

Yorke also reflected on the drawbacks of extreme security measures, citing examples of people who received threats and subsequently isolated themselves behind protective barriers. “It’s not an easy decision to make, but it’s better than the alternative,” he said.

Styles described walking as offering a unique perspective, particularly for an artist. “I read something about walking being the artist’s kind of perspective, because you’re at ground level and you see things that you just don’t see if you’re driving everywhere,” he noted.

The disclosures shed light on how personal relationships and conscious decisions have influenced Styles’ approach to fame and public exposure, marking a shift from caution to a more open engagement with the world around him.
