Victoria is home to thousands of pubs, each with its own unique character and role within their communities. Some serve as central meeting points in rural towns, while others function as vibrant hubs for city nightlife. Beyond offering a drink, these establishments provide spaces where locals gather to connect and share stories.

Highlighting the significance of pub culture in the state, former Brisbane Lions captain and Fox Footy personality Jonathan Brown emphasized its role as an integral part of life in Victoria. Brown, who grew up on a farm in Bushfield near Warrnambool, recalled the importance of two local pubs during his youth: Mickey Bourke’s in Koroit and the Caledonian Hotel Motel in Hamilton.

Brown is involved in a statewide initiative organized by Carlton Draught to identify and celebrate “Victoria’s Most Legendary Pub.” The winning venue will be featured in a large mural on Melbourne’s historic Abbotsford Brewery, created by Heesco, a well-known Australian artist specializing in large-scale public artworks, including silos.

“Whether it’s where you watch the footy, catch up with mates or celebrate life’s big moments, pubs are woven into the fabric of Victorian life,” Brown stated. “It’s great to see the people and places that make our pub culture so special being recognised in such a unique way.”

Residents and visitors are invited to nominate their favorite pubs through the campaign’s website, enabling a broad celebration of the state’s diverse and storied pub landscape.
