BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Chicago Blackhawks dropped their third consecutive game to start the NHL season, losing 4-3 to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night at KeyBank Center. The defeat extended Chicago’s winless streak against Buffalo to seven games, as the Sabres continue their dominance in the series, having earned points in each of the last 11 meetings.
Chicago's defensive struggles persisted, particularly in managing rush opportunities, which proved costly as Buffalo scored both the tying and go-ahead goals off breakaways. Despite holding a 3-2 lead into the third period, the Blackhawks could not prevent the Sabres from rallying, with center Jiri Kulich netting the decisive goal with 6:40 remaining.
The Blackhawks were missing defenseman Bowen Byram, who was absent due to a family matter. Byram, recently acquired from Buffalo in a trade this past June, did not see action against his former team. Kevin Korchinski and Ethan Del Mastro took on added defensive responsibilities in his absence. While both struggled defensively, Blashill praised Del Mastro for his confidence and overall play.
Veteran forward Patrick Kane was in the lineup, drawing boos from the Buffalo crowd due to his recent decision to re-sign with Chicago instead of joining his hometown Sabres during free agency. Despite the hostile reception, Kane expressed support for Buffalo teams, acknowledging their recent playoff success. Jordan Greenway, a former Sabres player, received a warm welcome during his first return to Buffalo since leaving.
The Blackhawks showed a marked improvement from their prior two losses on the road in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. They started strong against Buffalo, taking a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Ryan Donato and Tyler Bertuzzi, the latter assisted by Anton Frondell and Teuvo Teräväinen. Oliver Moore added a goal late in the second period, temporarily giving Chicago a 3-2 advantage.
However, the Blackhawks struggled to sustain offensive pressure, finishing with just 15 shots on goal from 38 attempts, significantly outpaced by the Sabres’ 28 shots on goal from 64 attempts. Chicago’s defensive woes, particularly during crucial shifts late in the game, underscored the team's need for continued development early in the season.
Coach Jeff Blashill noted the team’s improved competitiveness and willingness to learn from mistakes but emphasized the necessity of better defensive execution. “You’re going to make mistakes and you want to learn and grow, and that’s what we’ll focus on,” Blashill said.
Alex Vlasic resumed his role as the Blackhawks’ top defenseman in Byram’s absence and posted a plus-3 rating with two assists. He highlighted the importance of maintaining consistent effort and speed throughout the entire game.
Chicago returns home for its season opener Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues. It will mark Kane’s first regular-season game at the United Center since being traded earlier this year. Vlasic expressed anticipation for the home atmosphere and fan support, describing it as among the best in the league and a crucial factor in energizing the team.
The Blackhawks will look to secure their first win of the season in front of their home crowd as they seek to build momentum after a challenging road trip.
