Hayley Wickenheiser and the Toronto Maple Leafs have ended their professional relationship following eight years with the NHL team’s front office. Wickenheiser announced the departure in an Instagram post on Thursday, citing multiple discussions with the team’s new general manager, John Chayka.

Wickenheiser expressed that during these conversations, she anticipated remaining in a role where she could continue to have a meaningful impact within the organization. However, she stated it became evident that Chayka’s leadership envisioned a different direction for the team’s management structure.

Wickenheiser initially joined the Maple Leafs in August 2018 as assistant director of player development, shortly after concluding an illustrious playing career. She was promoted to assistant general manager in July 2022. Throughout her tenure, she highlighted pride in the achievements of the player development team and gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with coaches, management, players, and other staff members.

Wickenheiser’s playing career includes leading Canada to four Olympic gold medals and seven world championships. She holds the record for most points in Canadian women’s hockey with 168 goals and 379 points over 276 international games.

Chayka confirmed Wickenheiser was among several front-office personnel released as part of a broader organizational review. In a statement, he described the decisions as difficult and emphasized that they did not reflect on the dedication or contributions of those affected. Chayka extended his thanks to departing employees and wished them success in their future endeavors.

The move marks a significant change within the Maple Leafs’ management ranks as Chayka continues to shape the team’s leadership approach. Wickenheiser indicated that she looks forward to the next phase of her career following this transition.
