Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press) has marked its inaugural participation at the 78th Frankfurt Book Fair, held from October 7 to 11 in Germany, aiming to expand the international presence of Qatari literature and enhance cultural exchange through publishing rights agreements.

Bachar Chebaro, executive director of HBKU Press, highlighted that the Frankfurt Book Fair differs from conventional book fairs by focusing on the business of negotiating publishing and translation rights rather than direct sales to the public. This approach facilitates professional meetings and contracts that enable books to cross linguistic and geographic boundaries.

HBKU Press’s involvement at the fair follows a dual strategy. On one front, the press seeks to acquire new titles from Western publishers to introduce them to Qatari and broader Arab readers through Arabic translations. On the other, it showcases works by Qatari authors and illustrators to attract foreign publishers interested in translating and distributing these titles in multiple languages.

Chebaro noted that the press has successfully negotiated the sale of publishing rights for Qatari authors to several international markets, including Germany and Turkiye, allowing their works to reach audiences beyond the Arab world.

The Frankfurt Book Fair, one of the largest and most influential global publishing events, features around 4,000 exhibitors and hosts more than 3,800 activities both within the fairgrounds and across the city of Frankfurt. The event also includes the Literary Agents Centre, which brings together 319 agencies from 32 countries, providing extensive opportunities for rights trading and professional networking.

Through its participation, HBKU Press aims to foster cultural dialogue, broaden the reach of Qatari literature, and strengthen its role in the global publishing landscape.
