HE Abdullah bin Khalifa al-Attiyah, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Qatar National Archives, recently reflected on his nearly 65-year relationship with the late His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, known as the Father Amir. In an interview on Qatar Television, al-Attiyah described their bond as a lifelong journey that began in childhood and developed through various stages of their lives.

Al-Attiyah recalled that their connection initially stemmed from family ties before evolving as classmates and close friends during preparatory school. They not only attended the same school and shared a circle of friends but also studied in the same class, fostering daily companionship from an early age. Their personal relationship deepened over time and eventually transformed into a professional partnership.

In his public service career, al-Attiyah served for many years as director of the Father Amir’s Office before taking on the role of Chief of the Amiri Diwan. He emphasized that the leadership qualities associated with Sheikh Hamad—such as courage, determination, and a strong sense of responsibility—were evident well before his formal assumptions of leadership. According to al-Attiyah, these attributes were integral to Sheikh Hamad’s personality from youth rather than traits acquired later.

Beyond his leadership capabilities, al-Attiyah highlighted Sheikh Hamad’s simplicity and warmth in his dealings with others. Despite his position as the nation’s leader, Sheikh Hamad is remembered for making people feel at ease, engaging with them as an ordinary individual rather than as a head of state. Al-Attiyah praised the late Father Amir for his unwavering commitment to his principles throughout his life.
