Starting in 2027, several buses operating on Singapore’s service 36 route, which connects the city to Changi Airport, will be equipped with three-tiered luggage racks. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on July 22 that these racks will be installed on 12 single-deck buses, with the rollout occurring in phases beginning in the second quarter of that year.

The luggage racks are designed to securely hold up to six large pieces of luggage per bus, featuring safety measures such as anti-slip flooring and anti-roll humps to prevent bags from shifting during transit. Despite the addition of the racks, wheelchair spaces will remain available on all affected buses, and there will be no changes to current fares for service 36.

Service 36 was selected for the installation of luggage racks as it is the only direct bus route between Changi Airport and the city center. According to the LTA, a higher proportion of commuters on this route travel with luggage compared to other bus services, given its stops at key locations such as Orchard Road, Parkway Parade, Suntec City, the Singapore Management University, and the Four Seasons Hotel. The bus service is operated by Go-Ahead Singapore.

The decision follows a three-month trial conducted from August to November 2025, during which a luggage rack was mounted on one of the buses operating on service 36. The trial demonstrated that the racks helped reduce obstructions in aisles and priority seating areas, improving the flow and comfort for passengers.

The LTA’s implementation of luggage racks on service 36 aims to enhance commuter experience, especially for travelers moving between the airport and the city, by providing dedicated and secure storage space for baggage on board.
