Middle-aged Britons residing in coastal areas face higher risks of chronic health conditions compared to those who grew up by the sea but later moved inland, according to a recent study. The research found that individuals living by the coast in mid-life are 21 percent more likely to have two or more long-term illnesses, including cancer, diabetes, and depression.
The study also identified elevated rates of asthma, back pain, hearing loss, high blood pressure, eye disease, and heart problems among coastal residents. Researchers attributed these disparities largely to economic and social factors rather than geographic location alone.
Data analyzed from nearly 28,000 participants across two major longitudinal studies—the 1958 National Child Development Study (NCDS) and the 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS)—showed that poorer health outcomes correlate with patterns of deprivation and migration. The studies followed participants from birth into mid-life, assessing the prevalence of multiple chronic conditions by ages 55 and 46, respectively.
Professor Stephen Jivraj of University College London, lead author of the study published in BMJ Public Health, explained that while exposure to sea air might have some health benefits, the overall picture is complicated by socioeconomic factors. Specifically, the decline of coastal industries such as tourism and fishing has led to reduced employment opportunities. This economic downturn has prompted more affluent residents, who initially helped sustain coastal economies, to leave in search of better prospects inland. Younger generations, often moving away for education and not returning, further contribute to demographic shifts.
Consequently, coastal areas have experienced an influx of populations with higher levels of deprivation, which is closely associated with poorer health. The research found that people born into the most deprived coastal neighborhoods were three times more likely to remain in these areas into mid-life than those from better-off coastal zones. Additionally, individuals moving to coastal areas from elsewhere in England and Wales frequently transitioned from less deprived childhood neighborhoods to more deprived communities later in life.
Professor Jivraj highlighted the role of geographic isolation, noting that the sea itself acts as a physical barrier impacting access to education, employment, and healthcare. This isolation can exacerbate existing inequalities and contribute to the concentration of health problems within coastal communities.
Overall, the findings suggest that the health challenges facing Britain’s coastal populations stem from entrenched economic deprivation and selective migration patterns rather than the coastal environment per se. Addressing these disparities will likely require targeted social and economic interventions to improve living conditions and opportunities in seaside towns.
