A Staten Island woman died Thursday after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on Father’s Day, her family said, as authorities continue to search for the driver. Diana Rolon, 60, was hit by a white BMW SUV while attending a yard sale near Catherine Street on Decker Avenue in Port Richmond shortly before 4:20 p.m. on Sunday. The vehicle, reportedly speeding and without license plates, fled the scene immediately after the collision, according to police.
Rolon, described by relatives as a devoted single mother and paraprofessional at PS 373R in Tompkinsville, suffered severe injuries including an intracranial hemorrhage, multiple fractures to her arm, leg, and face, and was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center in critical condition. She underwent emergency brain surgery but was later declared brain dead, passing away four days after the incident.
Family members expressed heartbreak and frustration over the driver’s actions, calling the fleeing motorist a “coward” and condemning the decision to leave the scene. Rolon’s niece, Cynthia Feliciano, emphasized that the incident occurred on a stretch of Decker Avenue lacking traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps or cameras, and urged authorities to implement changes to prevent similar tragedies.
Rolon’s son, 17-year-old Michael, who had just graduated from Michael J. Petrides High School, had been by his mother’s side throughout her hospitalization, postponing celebrations that had been planned in honor of his graduation. The family described Rolon as a caring and selfless individual who devoted her life to supporting her son and others.
The family has launched a fundraiser to cover funeral expenses and medical bills, with contributions nearing $27,000 toward a $100,000 goal as of Friday. Police have appealed for information on the vehicle and driver, encouraging anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers. Investigators continue to pursue leads in the ongoing search for the driver responsible for the fatal crash.
