Heart of Midlothian manager Wouter Vrancken has emphasized the importance of a positive and cohesive team performance as his squad prepares to face Benfica in the Europa League at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz. The Scottish side enters the fixture aware of the challenge posed by the Portuguese club, who recently earned a convincing 5-0 victory over St Gallen.
Vrancken acknowledged Benfica’s quality and warned of the need for discipline, especially in minimizing errors. Hearts have struggled recently, having conceded six goals across two legs against Sturm Graz in the Champions League qualifiers and dropping points after surrendering a 1-0 lead in their Premiership opener against Aberdeen. The manager stressed that while defensive solidity is crucial, his team cannot adopt a purely passive approach.
“Benfica are a dominant team, really good in possession, quality on the ball, skilful every player on the pitch,” Vrancken said. “But it’s not only positive when you have the ball all the time and you’re constantly attacking. You can also be positive in how you defend, how you stick together, how you put your block together.” He added that Hearts aim to avoid being confined to their own penalty area, instead seeking to demonstrate collective resilience and teamwork throughout the match.
The manager highlighted Benfica’s offensive strengths, including their ability to exploit spaces, effective midfield infiltrations, and clinical finishing in both attacking and defensive phases. Particular attention will be paid to striker Vangelis Pavlidis, who scored four goals in the 5-0 win over St Gallen. Still, Vrancken insisted that focusing on one player would leave the team vulnerable elsewhere, given Benfica’s overall quality "all over the pitch."
“It’s a good challenge for us to show we can work together in difficult moments and also not only defend but also try to do something with the ball,” Vrancken said. “When you’re just going to kick balls away, then they come back faster than the ball is going forward. We have to give ourselves some air by doing good things on the ball and showing some guts on the ball.”
Regarding player availability for the Europa League clash, Vrancken reported that all players included in the European squad are fit to play. Those absent from the squad list are currently sidelined with injuries. As Hearts prepare to take on one of Europe’s strongest sides, the manager's focus remains on unity and controlled positivity in the face of a daunting challenge.
