Newly appointed Hearts head coach Wouter Vrancken faced a difficult start to his tenure as his team suffered a 4-0 loss to Sturm Graz in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie. The match, played away from home, severely dented Hearts’ chances of progressing in the competition ahead of the second leg at Tynecastle Stadium on Tuesday.

Hearts conceded early on in the match when Jon Gorenc Stankovic capitalized on a long throw, outjumping the defense to head the ball into the net just four minutes after kickoff. Shortly after, in the 59th minute, Jurgen Heil struck the final goal of the match. He calmly converted a return pass, shooting past Milne at the near post after being given ample space and time by the Hearts defenders.

The defeat leaves Hearts with a significant deficit to overcome as they return to Edinburgh for the second leg. Vrancken’s side will need to address defensive vulnerabilities, particularly in set-piece situations that have been exploited twice in this match, to mount a credible comeback and sustain their Champions League aspirations.
