Hearts manager Wouter Vrancken is considering defensive reinforcements as the team contends with multiple injuries and suspensions ahead of a demanding fixture schedule. The Scottish Premiership club faces a challenging period that includes four European matches and three domestic games this month.

The squad has been significantly weakened by the absence of key defensive players. Captain Craig Halkett, vice-captain Stephen Kingsley, recent signing Malachi Fagan-Walcott, and right-back Christian Borchgrevink are all sidelined due to injuries. In addition, centre-back Stuart Findlay is suspended for Sunday’s home match against Dundee United following a red card received during last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Aberdeen.

Vrancken was forced to field midfielder Oisin McEntee at centre-back during the season opener at Pittodrie and was left with a limited defensive bench, highlighted by only one substitute defender, Jamie McCart. With the current injury and suspension list, the manager acknowledged the need to address the depleted defensive line.

“Yeah, we have to see,” Vrancken said when asked about potential transfers. “We have to talk about it. We have to look during the next days.”

As Hearts prepare for Thursday’s high-profile Europa League qualifier away to Benfica, Vrancken has included 20-year-old MJ Kamson-Kamara in the European squad as a replacement for Fagan-Walcott, who sustained an ankle injury during the midweek Champions League qualifier loss to Sturm Graz.

Vrancken described the upcoming trip to Lisbon as a tough assignment, especially following a difficult start to the Premiership campaign. Hearts opened with a 2-1 loss at Aberdeen, despite taking an early lead through McEntee, only for Lewis Mayo to equalize for the hosts in the final minutes, before a stoppage-time penalty converted by Dons captain Kevin Nisbet sealed the result.

“Difficult, difficult,” Vrancken commented on facing Benfica at the Estádio da Luz. “It could help if we win this game. That could help a lot when you go to the next one, especially when you play a top European team.”

The outcome of these upcoming fixtures may be pivotal as Hearts navigate an injury-hit squad through a strenuous early-season period marked by both domestic and continental challenges.
