France experienced a significant increase in mortality during a historic heat wave that struck from mid-June to early July, according to data released by Public Health France. Between June 17 and July 2, regions affected by the extreme temperatures reported a total of 21,674 deaths from all causes. Based on statistical models using data from previous years, the expected number of deaths during this period would have been approximately 15,910, resulting in an estimated 5,764 excess deaths attributed to the heat wave.
This excess mortality, representing a 36% increase above normal levels, is the highest recorded for a French heat wave since the deadly 2003 event, which claimed an estimated 15,000 lives. The heat wave this year produced unprecedented conditions, including record-breaking daytime temperatures on June 24 and 25, with an average national temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and peak temperatures exceeding 104 degrees Fahrenheit in many areas. Notably, night-time temperatures also remained unusually high, exacerbating health risks.
More than half of the excess deaths occurred during the period from June 25 to June 27, coinciding with the peak of the heat wave. Public Health France highlighted the unusual nature of the event, noting its early timing in the summer, intensity, and duration, which exposed much of the population to hazardous heat while schools and workplaces were still fully operational.
The Paris region was the hardest hit, reporting 1,999 more deaths than expected, amounting to an 80% increase compared to normal mortality rates. Funeral service providers in the capital faced challenges in managing the surge in fatalities, with some mortuaries reaching capacity and needing to defer accepting additional bodies. Hospitals also experienced increased demand as they treated numerous patients suffering from heat-related illnesses. Approximately half of the deaths occurred in hospital settings, around one-third took place at home, and the remainder were largely among residents of care homes for the elderly.
The current figures represent a substantial increase from earlier estimates, which had identified approximately 2,000 excess deaths during the peak week of the heat wave from June 22 to June 28. Officials caution, however, that the final toll may evolve as further data is analyzed. Experts also emphasize that heat-related fatalities are often underreported because causes such as heart attacks triggered by extreme heat may be recorded under other medical conditions on death certificates.
Across Europe, the heat wave led to a broader spike in mortality, with preliminary figures indicating over 10,000 excess deaths in various countries during the peak of the event. Public Health France anticipates updating its mortality figures later in the year as more comprehensive information becomes available.
