Heavy monsoon rains have caused severe flooding in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, resulting in at least 50 deaths and the displacement of approximately 700,000 people, officials reported on Friday. The Brahmaputra River, which originates in Tibet and flows roughly 900 kilometers through Assam, overflowed its banks after days of intense rainfall, inundating nearly 900 villages and submerging large areas.

The floods swept away homes and infrastructure, leaving more than 7,000 households without electricity. Around 300,000 residents have been evacuated to government-run relief camps where food and essential supplies are being distributed. Helicopters have been deployed to deliver aid to areas that remain difficult to access. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed ongoing rescue and relief operations involving police, disaster response teams, and local volunteers.

The flooding also disrupted daily life in Guwahati, Assam's capital city with an estimated population of 2 million. Submerged roads stranded commuters for hours and led to closures in several parts of the city, with some locations under water as deep as waist level. Local resident and journalist Sudip Mazumdar reported having to remain overnight at his office due to the impassable streets.

The disaster has severely affected rural communities, including farmers like 52-year-old Jatin Gogoi from Nazira, whose bamboo house was destroyed along with his livestock. “I lost all my cattle. My five-member family and I have nowhere to go, so we are taking shelter in a relative’s home,” Gogoi said in a phone interview.

Experts attribute the worsening monsoon patterns partly to human-induced climate change. Traditionally, the monsoon season in South Asia occurs from June to September, with a secondary phase from October to December. However, increased atmospheric warming is leading to irregular rainfall patterns characterized by sudden, extreme downpours followed by prolonged dry periods, complicating flood management and disaster preparedness efforts across the region.
