LONDON — Helen Mirren, the renowned British actress, has been appointed a Companion of Honour in the 2026 UK birthday honours list announced by King Charles III on June 13. The accolade is one of the highest distinctions the monarch can grant, recognizing individuals who have made a significant and lasting contribution to British life. Membership in the order is limited to 65 living members at any one time and includes distinguished figures such as environmentalist David Attenborough, author Margaret Atwood, and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

At age 80, Mirren joins this exclusive group in recognition of her extensive career in acting and her advocacy for female performers. Her body of work spans more than six decades, beginning in the 1960s with notable performances in the National Youth Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Mirren’s film credits include roles in “The Long Good Friday,” “Excalibur,” and “The Madness of King George.” She achieved widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison in the British television series “Prime Suspect,” which ran for seven seasons. Mirren’s international prominence was further solidified when she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2007 for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” a film centered on the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death in 1997.

The Companion of Honour was established in 1917 by King George V to recognize those who have made major contributions to the arts, science, medicine, or government over an extended period. Members retain their place in the order until death, at which point a new honoree is selected to fill the vacancy. The latest list includes nearly 1,200 individuals honored on the occasion of King Charles III’s birthday, following the tradition of biannual awards granted both at New Year and in June.

The appointment of Mirren comes shortly after the death of David Hockney, one of Britain’s most celebrated artists of the last century. His passing last Thursday is expected to result in a new appointment to the Companion of Honour in the upcoming New Year’s honours list.
