HelpAge Sri Lanka hosted its annual indoor sports competition for elders at the HP Gooneratne Elders Day Centre in Borupana, Ratmalana. The event brought together around 25 participants aged 55 and above from the day centre to engage in a variety of games designed to promote physical and mental well-being.
Participants competed in activities such as carrom, draught, snakes and ladders, musical chairs, and a blindfolded ball-passing game. Winners were awarded cash prizes in recognition of their achievements.
Nishantha Gooneratne, a member of the HelpAge Council, emphasized that the competition aimed to foster affection and support for seniors, enhancing their overall health and quality of life. Executive Director Dr. Harsha Bandara highlighted that the day centre serves elders in need during weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering free meals to attendees. He also appealed to the public for continued support to sustain and expand these services.
The event was attended by HelpAge officials including Nelum Ekanayake, Head of the Ratmalana Day Centre Sunethra Kankanamge, Sujeewa Gamage, Dilshan de Silva, and C. B. Weerasinghe. The centre continues to provide a communal space aimed at improving the quality of life for the elderly in the region.
