Passengers and crew aboard Flydubai Flight 1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv prevented a potential catastrophe on Wednesday after a violent incident involving the co-pilot, who allegedly stabbed the captain and attempted to crash the plane. The Boeing 737 was cruising at approximately 34,000 feet when the attack occurred, forcing the aircraft into a rapid descent over the Saudi Arabian desert before an emergency landing was made.
The flight captain, identified as Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, was stabbed multiple times by the co-pilot, who reportedly tried to seize control of the aircraft to crash it within Israel. Despite serious injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door to alert passengers and crew, allowing several individuals to enter and restrain the assailant.
Passengers described chaotic scenes on board as the aircraft plummeted roughly 18,000 feet in about two minutes. Many were thrown from their seats, and overhead compartments dislodged during the steep dive. Among those who intervened was Yaniv Hayoun, an Israeli plumber and passenger, who subdued the attacker with a headlock and reportedly applied control inputs to help stabilize the descent. Hayoun credited his limited understanding of flight controls to watching aviation disaster documentaries.
Two off-duty pilots who were passengers on the flight assisted in regaining control and safely landing the plane at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Following the landing, Machchhar was evacuated and received medical treatment for his wounds and was reported to be in stable condition. The co-pilot was detained by Saudi authorities and also received medical care.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the captain and the passengers involved as heroes, stating they prevented a "catastrophic midair disaster." Netanyahu commended Machchhar’s bravery in resisting the attacker despite his injuries and highlighted the courage shown by those who intervened. Netanyahu subsequently met with several passengers, including Hayoun, expressing gratitude for their actions. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz labeled the event as “a jihadist terrorist attack” based on initial information indicating the co-pilot’s intention was to crash the plane with all passengers on board.
Flydubai, the UAE-based airline operating the flight, emphasized that the motives behind the cockpit altercation remained unclear and urged restraint until investigations are complete. The airline is cooperating with authorities as inquiries continue.
The incident raised concerns over security measures after questions emerged about how a knife was brought on board the aircraft. In response, Israel ordered increased security protocols for domestic and foreign airlines operating flights to the country. Israeli and Saudi Arabian air forces also dispatched fighter jets during the emergency.
Passengers described the event as terrifying, with some seeking to comfort family members during the plunge. Several reported minor injuries, mostly resulting from the struggle and sudden aircraft movements. Medical personnel who assessed the travelers after the landing noted that all but one passenger were able to walk off the plane independently, though many were visibly shaken.
The investigation remains ongoing, with officials examining the co-pilot’s background, motives, and whether any external organizations were involved. Israeli authorities are also probing the co-pilot’s identity and citizenship status amid reports he is an Omani national, which raised questions due to diplomatic restrictions between Israel and Oman. The Omani Foreign Ministry has yet to comment on the incident.
