A mural honoring FDNY EMS Captain Alison Russo was unveiled Saturday in Astoria, Queens, commemorating the firefighter who was fatally stabbed during a random attack last year. The tribute ceremony took place at 40-19 20th Avenue, directly across from Fire Station 49, where more than 40 EMS and FDNY personnel, as well as family members, gathered to pay their respects.

Russo, 61, was attacked on September 29, 2022, during her lunch break by Peter Zisopoulos, who was later convicted of her murder and sentenced in 2025 to 25 years in prison. The mural, created by artists Benny Guerra and Fernando Garcia, features a large LED-lit image of Russo, accompanied by a banner stating “Never Forgotten Forever a Hero.”

The artwork was positioned on the building facing the fire station so that it is visible to EMS workers as they depart, serving as a continual tribute to Russo’s memory. William “Zac” Zaccari, the building’s owner, said the mural is meant to offer comfort, noting that Russo will “be smiling at them” as they leave for calls.

Craig Fuoco, Russo’s brother, expressed gratitude for the support shown by the community and the FDNY during the dedication, highlighting the significance of their presence at the event. The mural stands as a reminder of Russo’s service and the impact she had on those who knew her.
