Top performances and several meet records highlighted the final day of the All Island Schools Games Athletics Championship held on Tuesday at Diyagama. Athletes from across the country showcased exceptional talent in various track and field events.
In the Under 18 boys' 3000 meters, Shashen Ravihansa Rajapaksha of Ratnayake Central Walala set a new benchmark, finishing the race in 8:58.50 to establish a fresh meet record. Rajapaksha’s performance was particularly notable given that several teammates from Ratnayake Central had recently fallen ill, affecting the school's overall standing in the competition.
The field events also saw remarkable achievements. Heshara Jayasinghe from St. Joseph Vaz's College, Wennappuwa, became the first to surpass the 17-meter mark in the Under 20 boys' shot put, sending the shot 17.30 meters. This effort broke the previous meet record held by Jayavi Ranhinda Alwis, marking a significant milestone in the event’s history.
In the Under 20 girls' 400 meters hurdles, Abhimani Kodituwakku of Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya, delivered a time of 1:01.57. This performance shattered the nearly decade-old record set by Yamani Dulanjali of Ambagamuwa Central, signaling a shift in dominance in the hurdles event.
K.K. Baalasooriya of Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura, added to the list of record breakers with a discus throw of 41.82 meters in the Under 20 girls' category, further elevating the competitive standard.
The final highlight came from Dilini Rajapaksha of Lyceum International Wattala, who set a new meet record in the Under 18 girls' triple jump by clearing 12.73 meters, cementing her position among the leading young athletes in Sri Lanka.
These performances underscored the depth of young athletic talent nationwide, promising a bright future for the sport. Photographs from the event were captured by Kamal Wanniarachchi.
