Parents are being urged to exercise caution when using certain baby sleep aids and feeding products that may pose hidden risks to infants, according to experts from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). The organization highlighted concerns that some widely marketed “must-have” items could contribute to suffocation, choking, or overheating in young children.

Among the products drawing warning is the self-feeding cushion, which is designed to hold a baby’s bottle during feeding. RoSPA noted that these cushions can make it more difficult for infants to regulate the flow of milk, potentially increasing the risk of choking. The cushions often position babies in a semi-reclined posture, which may interfere with their swallowing reflexes.

The group also raised alarms about in-cot sleep aids, such as specially shaped pillows marketed to help babies sleep better. These items, while popular with some caregivers, can present safety hazards. Their use has been linked to an elevated risk of suffocation and overheating, conditions known to be associated with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

RoSPA recommended parents prioritize simplicity and safety by relying on tried-and-tested methods for feeding and sleep rather than adopting new products without proven safety benefits. This includes promoting back sleeping on a firm, flat surface free of loose bedding, soft toys, and pillows, consistent with official guidelines for reducing SIDS risk.

These warnings come amid ongoing efforts by child safety advocates to raise awareness about the risks associated with infant products that have not undergone rigorous safety testing. While many parents seek convenience and comfort aids, experts emphasize the importance of choosing items that do not compromise safe sleep and feeding practices.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents continues to encourage caregivers to critically evaluate baby care products and to consult trusted guidance from health professionals to reduce the potential for preventable infant injuries and fatalities.
