Rob Martin, a 51-year-old experienced climber from Oakland, California, was rescued after spending more than nine hours clinging to a narrow ledge on Laurel Mountain in the Sierra Nevada range. The incident occurred on August 22 near Inyo National Forest, about 50 miles southeast of Yosemite National Park.

Martin, who had driven approximately six hours to camp in the area with a friend, began his ascent of the 11,818-foot peak early that day. The two climbers started their route inside a steep gully carved into ancient rock formations. To avoid unstable scree within the gully, Martin moved outside it but found himself on a smooth rock face with no secure handholds or footholds. Unable to descend or re-enter the gully, he secured himself by looping a rope around a rock, though the anchor was unstable. He ultimately settled on a ledge of gray limestone approximately six inches wide and one foot long at around 10,600 feet elevation.

As he held his position, Martin attempted to communicate with his climbing partner, but strong winds made his calls inaudible. Concerned for his safety, Martin used a satellite phone to contact emergency responders. The Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team was notified around 1:20 p.m.

Efforts to airlift Martin were hindered by gusty winds reaching up to 50 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. A California Highway Patrol helicopter operated in the area but was unable to perform a hoist rescue due to severe weather conditions. Volunteers from the search and rescue team deployed on foot after being dropped off by the helicopter on Laurel Mountain.

Despite using GPS coordinates from Martin’s satellite phone, rescuers faced difficulty locating him amid the vast terrain and wind interference. Communication attempts were initially unsuccessful as voices were carried away. Over the course of several hours, Martin struggled physically, experiencing cramping and fatigue while maintaining his precarious grip.

As daylight waned, the possibility of spending the night stuck on the ledge weighed heavily on Martin’s mind. He feared losing his hold if he fell asleep. Eventually, one of the rescuers spotted a red jacket and exchanged calls with Martin, confirming his position. The rescue team then installed bolts and ropes to facilitate his safe extraction.

Martin was brought down after sunset and was unharmed. Following the rescue, he recovered at a nearby hotel and expressed deep gratitude to the search and rescue volunteers for their efforts in saving his life.
