The Himalayan region is confronting significant risks from future glacial floods, according to a senior United Nations official, as the death toll from a recent disaster in Nepal has surpassed 1,000. The flood, which occurred last week, was triggered by the collapse of a glacier near Langtang Lirung mountain, resulting in a landslide that sent a destructive wave down the Trishuli River.

Kanni Wignaraja, an assistant secretary-general at the UN and regional director for Asia and the Pacific at the UN Development Programme (UNDP), highlighted the growing threat posed by glacial hazards in the area. She pointed out that the damage extends beyond loss of life, threatening hydroelectric power infrastructure crucial for the region and rendering entire riverbanks, home to millions, increasingly uninhabitable.

Researchers identified 47 potentially dangerous glacial lakes spanning Nepal, China, and India in 2020, with more recent estimates suggesting the actual number is considerably higher. Wignaraja emphasized that the population at risk amounts to millions, citing updated data compiled by UNDP and partner organizations as of June.

The recent flood in Nepal was caused by a glacier collapse that led to a massive landslide, contrasting with glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs). GLOFs occur when meltwater accumulates behind natural barriers created by rock or debris. When the pressure becomes too great, these barriers break or overflow, releasing sudden flash floods downstream. Both types of disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity, attributed to climate change accelerating glacier melt. This process not only increases water volume but also destabilizes surrounding rock formations, weakening natural dam structures.

Adding to the region's vulnerability is the geological youth of the Himalayas, which makes them prone to tectonic activity that can trigger sudden collapses of glaciers or glacial lake barriers. Dangerous glacial lakes have also been identified throughout the Hindu Kush region, which shares similar concerns.

Wignaraja noted that among the countries in the region, Nepal is particularly dependent on glaciers for water resources and economic activities, making the challenge more acute. She underscored the difficult decisions facing Nepal’s authorities and residents, particularly as relocation to safer areas may be financially unfeasible for many living along riverbanks.

As the Himalayas continue to warm due to climate change, the risk of glacial hazards is expected to rise, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated regional responses and improved early warning systems to mitigate future disasters.
