A pygmy hippopotamus calf was born earlier than expected at Edinburgh Zoo, surprising staff who had anticipated the birth in August. The newborn arrived last Friday, just days after the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland announced the pregnancy.

The tiny calf was born to parents Otto and Gloria and joins siblings Haggis and Amara. Keepers and veterinarians discovered the newborn resting closely with its mother. The sex of the calf has not yet been disclosed.

Jonny Appleyard, hoofstock team leader at the zoo, described the arrival as an exciting development. The early birth adds to the conservation efforts for the species, which is considered vulnerable in its natural habitat.

Edinburgh Zoo continues to monitor the mother and calf to ensure their health and wellbeing during this critical period.
