His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman arrived in Beijing on Sunday evening for a two-day state visit to China, marking a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries. The visit, extended in response to an official invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping, is the first by an Omani Sultan to China since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations 48 years ago, and the first since Sultan Haitham’s accession to power.
Upon arrival at Beijing Capital International Airport, Sultan Haitham was welcomed by Pan Gongsheng, Secretary of the Communist Party Committee and Governor of the People’s Bank of China, alongside senior Chinese officials. The Sultan was accompanied by a high-level Omani delegation, including key government and security figures such as HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs; HH Sayyid Bilarab bin Haitham al Said, Minister of State and Governor of Muscat; Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister; and several senior military commanders. Members of Oman’s diplomatic mission in Beijing were also present.
On Monday, an official reception ceremony hosted by President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People is scheduled, underscoring the importance China places on its relationship with Oman.
The state visit has attracted extensive coverage across multiple Chinese media outlets, including the People’s Daily, Xinhua News Agency, China Central Television (CCTV), and China News Service, as well as various news websites and digital platforms. This media focus has gone beyond routine reporting of the visit’s activities to include analytical and background features highlighting Oman’s regional role and the historical context of its ties with China, particularly through the ancient Maritime Silk Road.
Key themes emphasized in the coverage include the strategic significance of the visit for deepening the political and economic partnership, enhancing cultural exchange, and exploring new areas for cooperation across sectors such as trade, investment, and education. An article by the Chinese Ambassador to Oman published prior to the visit traced the long-standing relationship between the two countries and outlined future opportunities for shared development and prosperity.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated the visit’s importance, describing it as a catalyst for expanding bilateral ties. During a press conference, a ministry spokesperson noted this is the first-ever visit to China by an Omani Sultan, and highlighted expectations for advancing cooperation.
Chinese journalists specializing in political and economic affairs have pointed to a growing interest among the Chinese public in further mutual understanding and cultural exchange with Oman. Among the promising initiatives discussed are plans to introduce Chinese language education within Omani schools and enhance media collaborations, including exchange visits by press delegations and joint media programming.
This visit represents a continuation of efforts by both countries to strengthen their strategic partnership and broaden cooperation, reflecting a shared commitment to developing multifaceted ties in the evolving international landscape.
