A 28-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident in Queens that killed a 58-year-old woman earlier this year, authorities announced Thursday.

Darius Adams, a Bronx resident, faces multiple charges including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, and reckless endangerment. He was ordered held without bail following his arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.

The incident occurred around 2:55 p.m. on March 11 on Jamaica Avenue near 158th Street in Jamaica. According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, Adams was driving his 2001 Lincoln LS in the bus-only lane when he allegedly swerved around a bus that had stopped to pick up passengers and struck Suzanne Schmieder as she crossed the street approximately 250 feet from a designated crosswalk. The impact caused Schmieder to be thrown into the air before she fell to the ground and slid underneath a parked car. Adams did not remain at the scene.

Officials said police located Adams later that evening outside a homeless shelter after he called 911 reporting a medical issue. At the scene, officers observed multiple liquor bottles nearby and noticed damage to Adams’ vehicle, including a broken side mirror, a crushed front end, and scratches on the hood. More alcohol containers were found inside the car, and fingerprint analysis confirmed Adams had been driving.

Schmieder and her husband, Joseph Lopez, had been living in a Queens shelter since their eviction two months prior and were in the process of applying for rental assistance from Social Security. Their daughter, Sydney Schmieder, said her mother had stepped outside to buy coffee when the collision occurred. Sydney described the behavior of the driver as "disgusting" and expressed hope that justice would be served.

Adams has a prior record including an arrest for assault, harassment, and weapon possession in April. He was released without bail on those charges and is scheduled for a court appearance in Bronx Criminal Court next month.
