Hitchin Town secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against unbeaten Kettering despite being reduced to nine men during their match on Saturday. The contest, held at Hitchin’s home ground, showcased the hosts’ resilience as they pulled level late in the second half after initially falling behind.

Kettering took the lead in the 40th minute when Bayley Brown converted a corner with a solid header, putting the visitors ahead just before halftime. Throughout the first half, Kettering dominated the play, with Edward Panter nearly doubling the lead for the visitors. Hitchin responded with chances of their own, including a header from Cieran Jones that was expertly tipped over the bar by Kettering keeper Paul White, and opportunities by Rio Deall that failed to find the target.

The match took a dramatic turn in the 75th minute when Hitchin’s Blue Joy was shown a second yellow card, reducing the home side to ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Hitchin continued to press forward. In the 84th minute, substitute Diogo Freitas-Gouveia was fouled inside the penalty area by Kettering’s Tom Leak, leading the referee to award a penalty. Freitas-Gouveia stepped up and confidently converted the spot kick to level the score.

Shortly after, in stoppage time, Hitchin suffered another setback when Luke Stokoe received a straight red card for a high challenge, leaving the home team with nine players for the closing moments. Nevertheless, the reduced side held firm to secure their third consecutive draw, denying Kettering a victory despite their dominant position earlier in the game.

The result sees Hitchin earn a valuable point against a well-organized and unbeaten Kettering squad, demonstrating significant fighting spirit amid challenging circumstances.
