Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has introduced Qatar’s first specialized Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Arthroscopy service at Aisha bint Hamad Al Attiyah Hospital, marking a notable development in the nation’s surgical care capabilities. This service, launched by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery team, offers patients minimally invasive surgical options for diagnosing and treating jaw joint disorders.

TMJ Arthroscopy involves the use of a small, high-definition surgical camera inserted through tiny incisions to provide direct visualization of the joint’s internal structures. This approach allows for precise diagnostic assessment and targeted therapeutic interventions, reducing the reliance on more invasive open surgeries. The procedure is designed to address a range of joint issues, such as inflammation, internal adhesions, problems with the articular disc, limited jaw movement, and chronic joint pain.

Dr. Ibrahim Fawzy, CEO and medical director of Aisha bint Hamad Al Attiyah Hospital, underscored the significance of the new service in enhancing the hospital’s role as a center for advanced surgical care. He highlighted that the availability of such innovative treatment locally eliminates the need for patients to seek care abroad, which positively impacts both the quality of healthcare and the overall patient experience. Dr. Fawzy emphasized that the introduction of TMJ Arthroscopy aligns with HMC’s broader strategy to incorporate medical innovations and state-of-the-art technologies aimed at improving treatment outcomes and patient quality of life.

Senior consultant and head of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at HMC, Dr. Khalid Abdul Jalil, described the launch as a major advancement for treating jaw joint disorders within Qatar. He noted that the technique combines diagnostic accuracy with therapeutic effectiveness through its minimally invasive nature, contributing to improved clinical results and a faster recovery process for patients. Dr. Khalid explained that the procedure enables simultaneous diagnosis and treatment of joint conditions, offering a streamlined approach that benefits both physicians and patients.

With this service now available, Qatar expands its healthcare offerings in specialized surgical techniques, reflecting the country's commitment to adopting internationally recognized medical advancements and delivering comprehensive care within its borders.
