Malaysian swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean was unable to replicate his strong performance from the 2022 Asian Games as the country's swimming team concluded their campaign at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre with a series of underwhelming results. The 24-year-old finished 13th in the men’s 400m freestyle, posting a time of 3:56.94, which was nearly 10 seconds slower than his national record of 3:47.38 set previously. This mark also lagged behind the 3:49.47 he recorded at the Hangzhou Games three years earlier, where he narrowly missed the bronze medal by 0.31 seconds.

His compatriot, Mohd Dhuha Zulfikry, also did not advance, finishing 16th with a time of 3:58.06 in the same event. Both swimmers had been aiming to deliver strong showings in what was expected to be their last major competition of the year but were unable to match their personal bests.

The final day proved disappointing for the Malaysian team overall, with all five swimmers participating across four events failing to progress past the heats. In the men’s 200m butterfly, Jayden Tan Khai Xin placed 17th with a time of 2:04.94, while Goh Li Jie finished 20th in 2:10.19. Meanwhile, in the men’s 50m breaststroke, Andrew Goh of Thailand, who is a Southeast Asian Games silver medalist, recorded 28.28 seconds, finishing 19th and nearly a full second off his national record of 27.40.

The outcomes marked a subdued end to Malaysia’s involvement in the Asian Games swimming competition, highlighting the gap between their current performances and previous personal and national records.
