Bangladesh will enter their upcoming two-Test World Test Championship series against the West Indies without the services of pace bowler Nahid Rana, a significant blow ahead of the matches starting October 28 at home. Rana, 24, has been a vital component of Bangladesh’s pace attack since his debut, known for his ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs. Over the past two years, he has taken 25 wickets in eight Tests, making him the most successful pace bowler for the Tigers in that period, second only to spinner Taijul Islam, who has 40 wickets.
Rana’s absence is particularly notable given his impact with the ball, especially on sporting surfaces. His strike rate of 47.1 compares favorably to other pacers in the team, including Hasan Mahmud, who has taken 28 wickets in 11 Tests during the same span but at a higher strike rate of 62.6 when playing alongside Rana. Taskin Ahmed, who has recently made a comeback, is the other pace bowler with figures closer to Rana’s effectiveness.
Although Bangladesh’s pace attack has struggled on slow or flat pitches historically, Rana’s ability to take wickets rapidly was showcased earlier this year in Mirpur, where he claimed four wickets in four overs using reverse swing against Pakistan. His presence has correlated with better team outcomes in the WTC, with Bangladesh winning three of five matches when he played, compared to just one win in three matches without him.
Chief selector Habibul Bashar acknowledged the setback of losing Rana due to injury but expressed confidence in the remaining pace options. “Not getting Nahid Rana for this series is definitely a big setback, but nobody has control over injuries,” Bashar said. “However, the rest of the players are doing very well, and Taskin has also made a comeback. Hasan, Ebadot, Shoriful — our fast-bowling department is quite good. Rana would have added an X-factor, but we are optimistic about the players in the squad.”
The team is expected to prepare pitches that provide some assistance to bowlers, a strategy seemingly supported by performances from Bangladesh’s pacers in recent overseas matches in Australia. Nonetheless, Bangladesh will face a formidable West Indies pace attack featuring Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales, and veteran Kemar Roach. Seales has been particularly effective against Bangladesh in recent series, taking 19 wickets in two meetings since 2022—the highest tally by any pacer against Bangladesh in the last four years. Roach, known for his skill against left-handed batsmen, holds a strong record versus Bangladesh, having taken 53 of his 304 Test wickets against the Tigers.
Bangladesh’s top order includes four left-handed batsmen—Tanzid Tamim, Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, and Najmul Hossain Shanto—who may face additional challenges against Roach’s expertise. As the series approaches, Bangladesh will aim to leverage home conditions to counterbalance the absence of Rana amid a potent Windies pace lineup.
