National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam called for the resignations of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, citing their alleged failure to effectively manage rising crime rates and soaring fuel prices over the past seven months. Nahid made the announcement during the launch of a week-long leaflet distribution campaign in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar area on October 23.

Nahid accused the government, led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), of neglecting its responsibilities and described it as “anti-people and undemocratic” due to its inability to introduce necessary reforms. He highlighted an increase in crime and drug trafficking under the Home Ministry’s watch, adding that opposition figures and journalists have continued to experience attacks and harassment, which he attributed to government inaction.

On the issue of energy, Nahid raised concerns about sustained high fuel prices, questioning how long citizens must endure these costs given the global energy situation. He criticized the government’s handling of the energy sector and demanded clarity on any measures planned to alleviate the burden on middle-income families, who he said are being compelled to reduce spending on essential goods.

To protest these issues, Nahid announced a large-scale demonstration scheduled for October 30 in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh in Dhaka. The protest aims to address deteriorating law and order, inflation in commodity and fuel prices, and the perceived politicization of state institutions. He urged citizens to join forces and build resistance to defend their rights amid the current political and economic challenges.
