David Molyneux, a former leader of Wigan Council, is set to receive the borough’s highest honor in recognition of his extensive public service. Molyneux, who retired from his council position in May, will be made an honorary freeman of Wigan.

He began his political career in 1982 when he was first elected to represent the Ince ward, a position he held continuously for 44 years. Molyneux, a lifelong resident of Ince, joined the Labour Party at the age of 20, following earlier involvement with trade unions starting at age 16.

In April, Molyneux announced he would not seek re-election in the upcoming local elections, citing health concerns and a desire to focus on family. His nomination for honorary freeman status received unanimous support across political parties during a full council meeting.

The award recognizes Molyneux’s longstanding commitment to public service and his substantial contributions to the borough throughout his decades-long tenure.
