Since its inception in 2015, the Star Golden Hearts Award (SGHA) has recognized more than 120 Malaysians who have made significant contributions across various sectors, including social welfare, community empowerment and education, disaster and crisis relief, as well as environment and wildlife conservation. The annual program honors individuals and organizations demonstrating compassion, dedication, and impactful action to improve the lives of others throughout Malaysia.
This year, the SGHA received 180 nominations reflecting the country’s ethnic and regional diversity, with candidates representing Malay, Chinese, Indian communities and those from Sabah and Sarawak. A total of 20 finalists—13 from Peninsular Malaysia and seven from Sabah and Sarawak—were shortlisted for the 2026 award cycle. For the first time, shortlisted nominees presented their initiatives directly to the judging panel, allowing the judges to gain a deeper understanding of their contributions and the tangible benefits delivered to local communities.
The judging panel comprises experts from various backgrounds, including social welfare, social entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and media. Tan Sri Gooi Hoe Soon @ Wee Hoe Soon, the chief judge, highlighted the resilience and unity of Malaysians in continuing to support one another amid ongoing societal challenges. He praised the breadth of volunteer efforts across diverse areas such as wildlife preservation, education, and emergency response, emphasizing that these changemakers often operate without seeking recognition.
SGHA annually awards ten winners—five individuals and five organizations—each receiving RM10,000, a trophy, and a certificate. Beyond financial assistance, the program provides media exposure through Star Media Group’s platforms to raise public awareness of the winners’ causes and to encourage wider community engagement.
The award initiative aims not only to celebrate selfless contributions but also to build a network of over 500 changemakers committed to fostering positive social impact. The final winners for 2026 are set to be announced at an awards ceremony scheduled for December 8.
By showcasing the stories of these everyday heroes, SGHA seeks to inspire Malaysians nationwide to participate in community betterment efforts while highlighting the vital role such grassroots initiatives play in the country’s social development. The program remains a platform that acknowledges and amplifies the work of those dedicated to uplifting vulnerable populations and protecting Malaysia’s natural and social heritage.
