Three years after the famous Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian’s Wall was felled, a hand-painted sculpture inspired by the iconic Northumberland landmark is set to be auctioned. The piece, titled The Dream, is the work of Whitley Bay artist Darren Mundy, who has painted the Sycamore Gap tree multiple times throughout his 16-year career.

The sculpture was recently displayed at Newcastle’s Discovery Museum as part of the Peter Rabbit: Tales on the Tyne public art trail, which took place across Newcastle and North Tyneside. The trail featured 96 sculptures and concluded on Monday. It was organized to support St Oswald’s Hospice, marking both the hospice’s 40th anniversary and the 160th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth, the creator of Peter Rabbit.

The Dream is among 40 individually decorated sculptures from the trail that will be sold at auction on October 13 at Newcastle Civic Centre. Proceeds from the auction will support the hospice’s charitable work.

Mundy, who has contributed artwork to previous St Oswald’s art projects, chose to depict the Sycamore Gap tree once again in tribute. He noted the emotional connection many have with the tree and expressed confidence that the sculpture will be cherished by its next owner.
