Nearly three years after a devastating attack by Hamas on October 7, 2021, Israel continues to grapple with the aftermath while emphasizing resilience and recovery, according to the country’s ambassador to the United Nations.
On that day, Hamas launched a large-scale assault against Israel, killing hundreds of civilians and soldiers, taking 251 hostages, and firing thousands of rockets into Israeli territory. The attack targeted families in their homes, attendees at a music festival, and broader civilian communities, marking one of the deadliest assaults against Israel in recent history.
In the years since, Israel has sought to rebuild and reaffirm its national strength. Addressing an international conference of counterterrorism agency leaders in New York, the Israeli ambassador underscored the concept of resilience as central to the Israeli experience. This resilience is exemplified by individuals such as Rachel Goldberg-Polin, whose son Hersh was killed while held captive by Hamas, and by couples like Eliya Cohen and Ziv Abud, who survived the attack at the Nova music festival under harrowing circumstances. Cohen endured over 500 days in captivity, while Abud survived by hiding among those killed during the attack. Abud has since advocated publicly for Cohen’s release and the rights of hostages.
The ambassador highlighted that despite the enduring trauma—marked by ongoing physical and psychological scars—the nation has not been broken. Families continue to mourn lost loved ones, while survivors work to rebuild their lives. Israel’s response has included confronting threats not only from Hamas but also from Hezbollah and Iran, organizations perceived as continuing existential threats to Israeli security.
The ambassador also noted ongoing challenges at the diplomatic level, pointing to efforts within international forums, including the United Nations, that Israel views as attempts to delegitimize the country. Despite suffering one of the most severe terrorist attacks in the 21st century, Israel faces accusations including genocide and war crimes from some international actors, a narrative the ambassador calls a distortion of the facts.
Nevertheless, Israel asserts it continues to grow and develop, highlighting advances in its high-technology sector, strengthened diplomatic relationships, and efforts to broaden peace in the region. The ambassador framed these developments as part of a collective commitment to life and recovery, echoing historical themes from Jewish history involving survival and renewal after crises such as exile and the Holocaust.
As Israel marks the nearly three-year anniversary of the October 7 attacks, the official statement reiterates remembrance for victims, support for survivors, and the ongoing determination to rebuild and move forward. The ambassador concluded by affirming that hope remains essential to the Israeli people’s spirit, emphasizing a continued choice of resilience and life even in the face of enduring adversity.
