Hornchurch marked their National League debut with a convincing 3-0 victory over fellow promoted side Kidderminster Harriers in a match played on Saturday. The win was secured through a dominant first-half performance, featuring three goals that set the tone for the contest at Hornchurch’s home ground.

The hosts took the lead in the 19th minute when a well-delivered in-swinging corner from captain Tom Wraight was flicked on by Ryan Inniss and finished on the goal line by Joe Kizzi. Seven minutes later, Hornchurch doubled their advantage thanks to a determined run from Kizzi, who released a through ball that forced a defensive error by Kidderminster’s Angus MacDonald, resulting in the ball being inadvertently deflected into his own net.

Hornchurch continued to press their advantage and extended their lead in the 34th minute when Makai Welch struck a powerful shot from distance, beating Harriers keeper Dave Richards to make it 3-0. The home side maintained control during the second half, creating several opportunities, though Richards made several key saves to preserve the clean sheet for Kidderminster.

Despite the deficit, Kidderminster showed resilience in the latter stages, with substitute Lewis Walker testing Hornchurch goalie Arthur Nasta, who managed to keep the clean sheet intact. However, the visitors struggled to gain momentum throughout the match, often being contained by Hornchurch’s defensive organization.

Hornchurch manager Daryl McMahon expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, highlighting their strong start and control of set-pieces as pivotal factors in securing the three points. “We started brightly and got a lot of set-pieces to put pressure on the goal. Despite scoring three in the first half, we could have had more in the second, although Kidderminster put up a good fight,” McMahon said.

Kidderminster manager Paul Wotton acknowledged the disappointing outcome and identified areas for improvement moving forward. “It’s not a great start. We didn’t do our jobs properly and we have a lot to learn as we go forward,” Wotton stated.

The result provides a positive platform for Hornchurch as they embark on their inaugural National League campaign, while Kidderminster faces the task of regrouping and addressing the shortcomings exposed in this initial fixture.
