The BBC’s football highlights programme Match of the Day has appointed a trio of presenters to replace longtime host Gary Lineker following a significant shake-up initiated by the network’s director of sport, Alex Kay-Jelski. Since the start of the 2025/2026 season, Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan have shared presenting duties, marking the end of Lineker’s 26-year tenure as the show’s lead presenter.

Lineker, known primarily for his career as an England striker before turning to broadcasting, has broadened his portfolio in recent years to include coverage of rugby league, the Olympics, the NFL, and major golf tournaments such as the Ryder Cup and The Open. In addition, he hosts The Sports Agents podcast with Gabby Logan, who is 53 years old. This trio—Cates, Chapman, and Logan—were named full-time hosts amid efforts to refresh the program’s format.

The decision to replace a single presenter with a rotating team received criticism from some quarters. Former Match of the Day presenter Des Lynam expressed disappointment that Cates was not appointed as the sole anchor, arguing that audiences generally prefer consistency in hosting. Lynam stated that he believed Cates should become the exclusive face of the show for the BBC, adding that changing attitudes towards female presenters made her an ideal choice.

Cates, for her part, has highlighted the positive dynamic among the trio since their appointment. Speaking on the White Wine Question Time podcast, she emphasized the absence of ego-driven competition in their working relationship, describing it as “a really lovely group to be in.” She noted that all three hosts are at similar points in their careers and have outside interests, which helps prevent conflicts and fosters mutual respect. Cates also mentioned that their shared desire to balance work with family life contributes to a harmonious working arrangement.

Chapman, a Lancashire native, gained recognition at the BBC as a sports reporter on Radio 1 before progressing to his own weekend radio show and ultimately becoming a mainstay on Radio 5 Live. Logan, an established broadcaster, brings extensive experience alongside her podcast work with Lineker.

Reports emerged in August that Kay-Jelski had encountered tensions with parts of the Match of the Day team, prompting concerns about potential departures following Lineker’s exit. There were unconfirmed suggestions that some pundits might consider moving into podcasting, similar to Lineker, although the BBC has denied these claims.

The BBC has declined to comment on the ongoing changes, and representatives for Cates and Chapman have not responded to requests for comment. The new presenting structure appears to represent a strategic shift for the network’s flagship football coverage as it seeks to modernize while managing established personalities.
