Manchester City midfielder Rodri, a key figure in Spain’s recent World Cup victory, is aiming to recover in time for the start of the 2026-27 season following minor back surgery. The 30-year-old underwent the procedure in late July and is expected to begin a brief rehabilitation period with a target return in late August.

City’s season kicks off soon, with the Community Shield scheduled against Arsenal on August 16, followed by their Premier League opener at home against Bournemouth on August 23. The club confirmed the surgery in a statement, noting that Rodri had experienced discomfort for some time before deciding to address the issue.

Rodri, who is entering the final year of his contract with Manchester City, remains a transfer target for Real Madrid, who have intensified their interest in securing the midfielder’s services. City has reportedly offered him a new contract, but no agreement has been finalized to date.

In recent seasons, the Spain international has faced a series of injury setbacks. He missed much of the 2024-25 campaign due to a significant knee injury and continued to deal with ongoing physical issues last season. Nevertheless, Rodri returned to fitness early this year and played an influential role as Manchester City vied closely with Arsenal for the Premier League title. A further injury during a victory over Arsenal in April sidelined him for several weeks, although he managed to return for the FA Cup final, which City won against Chelsea.

Rodri’s contributions extended beyond club football when he helped Spain claim the World Cup crown earlier this year, earning the tournament’s best player accolade. Despite speculation surrounding his future amid Real Madrid’s interest, City manager Enzo Maresca downplayed any concerns, stating it is normal for top players to attract such rumors.

As Rodri focuses on his recovery, both Manchester City and their supporters will be hoping he regains full fitness in time to contribute in what promises to be a competitive and demanding season.
