A property on Masefield Drive in South Shields has been closed by a court order following repeated reports of criminal activity and anti-social behaviour linked to the address. The closure order, granted on July 7 by South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, prohibits anyone from entering the council-owned home for a period of three months. Violations of the order during this time may result in arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment.
The decision came after an application supported by intelligence from Northumbria Police, which connected the property to various forms of disorderly and intimidating conduct. Allegations include suspected drug-related offences, criminal damage, threats, the use of weapons, and attempted arson. Local residents had also reported frequent disturbances involving groups congregating at the location.
Authorities noted that the volume and severity of incidents had escalated over time. Evidence presented to the court highlighted a pattern of behaviour involving attempts to forcibly enter and set fire to the property. These concerns raised significant safety and wellbeing issues for those living nearby.
James Maughan, head of public protection at South Tyneside Council, emphasized the council’s commitment to ensuring residents’ right to live safely and without disruption. He explained that closure orders are only pursued after thorough investigations and when all other options have been explored. The council works closely with policing partners to collect evidence and respond to reports of anti-social behaviour.
Maughan encouraged community members to continue reporting concerns, noting that even seemingly minor incidents can assist in identifying behavioural patterns and supporting enforcement actions. Residents and witnesses are urged to report issues via the South Tyneside Council website, email asb@southtyneside.gov.uk, or by calling 0300 123 6633. In cases of immediate danger or active crime, the public is advised to contact emergency services at 999.
