Although backed by Tehran, reports indicate the Houthis have begun developing guided missile systems using artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies, signaling a shift toward greater self-sufficiency.

The Houthis’ recent military activities illustrate this growing capability. They have launched long-range missile strikes targeting Israel, over 1,000 miles from Yemen’s borders, and employed naval drones to threaten maritime traffic in the Red Sea. On Wednesday, the group announced it had downed a Saudi fighter jet over Yemen with a missile manufactured locally. Saudi Arabia also reported thwarting a Houthi drone attack aimed at Mecca. These actions underscore the group’s expanding reach and lethality.

A recent analysis by Anthropic, an AI research company, revealed that a Houthi-linked cell in northern Yemen used AI tools to aid the development of guided weapons, indicating an effort to build complex missile systems independently. Since the Houthis seized Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, in 2014 and endured a Saudi-led military campaign, the group capitalized on cease-fire periods, especially the 2022 truce, to regroup and build its weapon-making infrastructure. Supply routes for arms components have multiplied, leveraging global black market networks to secure parts from countries such as China. Analysts emphasize that while the Houthis have yet to demonstrate operational deployment of certain advanced systems, including those assisted by artificial intelligence, their record suggests a persistent drive to enhance their military capabilities.
