Star garnets, a distinctive variety of garnet known for their asterism or star-shaped light pattern, have long been associated with Idaho, where they are the official state gem. These rare gemstones, characterized by four- or six-ray star patterns that appear when light reflects off needlelike inclusions of the mineral rutile, are primarily found in a forested area of northern Idaho near the small community of Clarkia.

Gene Stewart, 84, whose family has been integral to the local gem industry since the mid-20th century, highlighted the challenges in cutting star garnets to best display their signature star effect. His father, Dudley Stewart, who opened Stewart’s Gem Shop in Boise in 1945, played a pivotal role in popularizing Idaho’s star garnets starting in the 1950s. Although he did not discover the deposits, Dudley Stewart developed the technique of cutting the stones into dome-shaped cabochons, maximizing the visual impact of the star asterism. This innovation helped establish the garnet’s status, culminating in the Idaho legislature’s official designation of the star garnet as the state gem in 1967.

Garnets belong to a complex group of minerals with variations in chemical composition influencing their color and properties. Idaho’s star garnets are primarily an iron-rich almandine variety, usually deep red with hints of purple. According to experts, the desirability and value of these garnets depend largely on the clarity and sharpness of the star pattern caused by aligned rutile inclusions. While some stones exhibit prominent stars, others show only faint or barely visible patterns.

Although star garnets are closely linked with Idaho, they are not exclusive to the state. Deposits are also known in India, which, along with Idaho, remains one of the few sources providing the stones in commercially significant quantities. However, there is debate among gemologists and dealers regarding the global distribution of star garnets. Some specialists cite additional sources such as Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Brazil. Martin P. Steinbach, a German gemologist, noted that significant quantities of almandine star garnets might come from Brazil and India, suggesting Idaho contributes no more than 10 to 20 percent of annual production. Meanwhile, others in the trade, like Ross Sedawie of Gem Rock Auctions, affirm that while India and Madagascar supply star garnets, Brazil has not been a confirmed source.

For enthusiasts and tourists, the Emerald Creek Garnet Area in Idaho has been a popular destination for collecting star garnets for over five decades. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the site traditionally offered visitors opportunities to search for stones in excavated material for a fee. However, the site was temporarily closed in mid-2023 after the stockpile was depleted, with plans underway to resume operations once new material is excavated and brought in. In response to the closure, nearby private ventures such as Huckleberry Garnet have seen increased demand by offering fee digs and locally sourced star garnet jewelry.

Local operators emphasize that even deposits a few miles apart can yield different varieties of star garnets, appealing to collectors interested in diverse specimens. The broader draw of star garnets lies not only in their rarity and beauty but also in the excitement and 'thrill of the find' that motivates many rockhounds to explore Idaho’s gem-rich landscapes.
