Iran has introduced an upgraded version of its Hadid 110 drone, designed to evade U.S. air defenses through enhanced speed and stealth capabilities. The jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) reportedly reached operational status within the last two weeks, reportedly being deployed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in attacks targeting U.S. military bases and naval vessels in the region.

The Hadid 110, which is classified as a suicide drone or loitering munition, is an evolution of Iran’s existing drone fleet. While prior Iranian attack drones typically rely on propeller engines, this new model utilizes a turbojet engine capable of propelling the UAV to speeds exceeding 300 miles per hour. This significant increase in velocity is intended to reduce the reaction time available to opposing air defense systems, challenging their ability to detect, track, and intercept the incoming threat effectively.

The drone is launched using a solid-fuel booster that rapidly accelerates it to operational altitude before the jet engine takes over, allowing for swift deployment from battlefield locations. Its airframe incorporates stealth features, including a seamless design and radar-absorbing materials, complemented by an S-shaped air intake that conceals the engine’s fan blades from radar detection.

With an operational range of approximately 220 miles and the capacity to remain aloft for about one hour, the Hadid 110 carries a payload estimated around 66 pounds, sufficient to strike targets relatively close to Iran’s coast. While not classified as a long-range strategic weapon, its capabilities are considered a substantial improvement over earlier Iranian drones.

Iran claims that the Hadid 110 is wholly domestically produced, although the extent of foreign assistance remains unclear. Iranian officials have previously acknowledged support from China and Russia during ongoing conflicts, raising questions about the drone’s full origins. Nonetheless, the development marks a significant milestone for Tehran, particularly as years of international sanctions have constrained access to advanced avionics, engine technology, and materials critical for maintaining a modern air force. Iran’s manned aircraft fleet largely consists of aging American and Russian models, underscoring the strategic importance of advancing unmanned systems.

Beyond battlefield implications, the introduction of the upgraded Hadid 110 reflects the shifting internal military balance within Iran. Ballistic missiles and drone forces are controlled by the IRGC rather than the regular army, and each technological advancement further consolidates the IRGC’s influence over Iran’s broader military establishment. This increased authority affects key decision-making processes related to conflict and national security.

The timing of the drone’s unveiling, during ongoing hostilities and following the reported death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the early phase of the conflict, highlights the changing power dynamics within Iranian leadership. With Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, remaining in the background, practical control has increasingly shifted toward commanders overseeing missile and drone forces. As such, the Hadid 110 serves not only as a tactical weapon but also as a symbol of the IRGC’s growing prominence within Iran’s political and military spheres.
