Journey, the rock band renowned for its string of hits throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, is preparing to embark on what it calls its farewell tour, with a stop scheduled at Anaheim’s Honda Center on November 24. This event follows an earlier appearance in Los Angeles in September and is expected to serve as a capstone to a career marked by both commercial success and internal challenges.

Formed in 1973 in San Francisco by guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Gregg Rolie, both former members of Santana, Journey initially embraced a jazzy, improvisational style. The group’s trajectory shifted with the addition of vocalist Steve Perry, whose powerful voice helped define the band’s dramatic rock sound and propelled them to widespread popularity, despite mixed critical reception.

Journey’s catalogue includes more than two dozen hits that charted on Billboard’s Hot 100. Although the band never dominated the charts at the very top—for instance, “Faithfully,” their highest-ranking ballad, peaked at No. 12 in June 1983—their songs left a lasting imprint on American music culture. Tracks like “Faithfully” spotlight themes of life on the road and the emotional toll of maintaining relationships amid touring, capturing listeners with their heartfelt lyrics and soaring melodies.

After Perry’s departure, Journey experienced a downturn before rediscovering momentum thanks to lead guitarist Neal Schon’s discovery of Arnel Pineda, a singer from the Philippines whose vocal style closely resembles Perry’s. Pineda’s arrival via a YouTube video allowed the band to resume touring in large venues, maintaining their relevance into the streaming era. Today, Journey remains a fixture on platforms such as Spotify, boasting more monthly listeners than peers including Bruce Springsteen, U2, and Bob Dylan.

Despite their enduring popularity, Journey’s story has not been without conflict. Schon and current keyboardist Jonathan Cain, who joined the band in 1980 replacing Rolie, have engaged in legal disputes over financial matters, underscoring ongoing tensions behind the scenes.

As the band approaches this farewell leg of its touring history, fans will have the opportunity to revisit the music that has defined multiple generations. Journey’s blend of emotional ballads and rock anthems continues to resonate in media, advertising, and personal soundtracks, underscoring the band’s lasting influence on American rock music.
