In the early hours of last Sunday, a resident of Whelford, a village near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, alerted authorities after noticing suspicious activity involving three white vans parked on a country road. The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, reported seeing a large group of men wearing hoods and balaclavas. Her call to emergency services prompted police to arrive at the scene within 15 minutes, potentially preventing a planned attack near the RAF base.
RAF Fairford, located in southwest England, has seen heightened security amid recent tensions, as it serves as a staging ground for U.S. military operations targeting Iran. Locals have reported a significant increase in security measures over the past weeks, including the deployment of heavy vehicles such as tractors across access gates and the installation of large concrete barriers to reinforce security.
According to residents, the emergency call followed attempts to contact the base police directly, which went unanswered. Julian Tudsbery, a longtime Whelford resident, explained that after failing to reach base security, the individual decided to call 999—the British emergency number. The Whelford community quickly became aware of the unfolding situation through messages exchanged on a local WhatsApp group starting around 1:30 a.m.
Police detained five men at the scene on suspicion of explosives and terror-related offenses. Images circulated by media outlets showed the men shirtless and in custody during a nighttime operation. Following the arrests, residents of approximately 85 households in the village were instructed to evacuate and were temporarily relocated to a nearby leisure centre in the early morning hours.
Authorities responded to the incident with a substantial deployment of resources, including thirty emergency vehicles, bomb disposal experts, counter-terrorism officers, and military personnel. Explosives experts conducted thorough examinations of the three vans found at the site. Villagers witnessed the intensity of the operation as police officers went door to door while issuing evacuation orders.
RAF Fairford has drawn attention due to its role in U.S. air operations amid ongoing conflict with Iran. Its extended, reinforced runway accommodates large strategic bombers such as the B-1 and B-52, which have been recently involved in missions over Iran. These aircraft can carry a range of ordnance, including heavy "bunker-buster" bombs.
The swift action of a vigilant local resident, combined with the heightened security presence at RAF Fairford, appears to have disrupted a potential threat against a critical military installation during a period of elevated geopolitical tensions. Investigations remain ongoing.
