Meg and Mick McQueen launched their first milk delivery service in Fife, Scotland, in 1995, laying the foundation for what has grown into McQueens Dairies, a major player in the UK dairy sector. Starting with modest door-to-door deliveries assisted by their five children, the family-run business now operates across Scotland and England, making over a million deliveries weekly and employing 1,500 staff. In the fiscal year ending July 2025, McQueens reported revenues of £130 million and a pre-tax profit of £12.5 million.
The company’s roots trace back to Meg’s upbringing in Ayrshire, where her parents worked on dairy farms, and to Mick’s early career in the wines and spirits industry. After moving to St Andrews in the 1980s and shifting focus to milk sales, Mick and Meg identified a niche in doorstep deliveries near Leuchars, a community with many families and an RAF base. At a time when traditional milk delivery was declining, they innovated by leaving four pints every other day, targeting families rather than individuals, effectively doubling business volume.
The McQueens children were integral to early operations, delivering milk and collecting payments, helping manage tight cash flow constraints demanded by suppliers. Cash handling posed challenges, including occasional robberies, until the business transitioned to direct debit payments in 2002, which improved financial stability and safety for drivers.
Expansion continued steadily, with depots opening in Edinburgh and Galashiels before moving headquarters to Glasgow in 2004. A planned bottling facility funded partly by a Scottish government grant faced setbacks during the 2008 financial crisis when bank financing was withdrawn, delaying progress until 2014. Nevertheless, McQueens pressed on, entering the English market in 2012 with depots in Warrington, Huddersfield, and Mansfield.
A significant development came in 2019 with the acquisition of a former Müller dairy facility in East Kilbride. This multimillion-pound investment allowed McQueens to process and pasteurise milk in-house. The site became operational in early 2020, coinciding with a surge in home delivery demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The company’s turnover has since increased substantially, from £17.6 million in 2019 to a projected £150 million in 2025.
McQueens Dairies offers a range of products besides milk, including juices, eggs, bread, and oat milk sourced from a Lancashire supplier, broadening its appeal. The company emphasizes quality, sourcing raw milk from farms across the UK, processing it at its East Kilbride facility, and distributing it through 20 depots.
Although Meg stepped back from day-to-day management a decade ago to care for family, and Mick has reduced his involvement, both remain engaged in the business. Their five children have assumed senior roles, ensuring the company remains family-owned. The McQueens credit their success to strong family cohesion and resilience in overcoming challenges, underscoring a commitment to sustaining their legacy in the evolving dairy market.
