A new film, "Pressure," portrays this effort and the role of Group Captain James Stagg, the Royal Air Force meteorologist who advised General Dwight D. Eisenhower on the optimal timing for the operation amid rapidly changing conditions.
Set during one of the most crucial moments of the Second World War, the film dramatizes the intense pressure on meteorologists who had to predict weather beyond 24 hours—a feat considered nearly impossible with the technology available at the time. According to Dr. Stephen Burt, a University of Reading academic who advised on the production, weather forecasting in the 1940s relied heavily on limited surface observations and the meteorologists’ intuition. While today’s forecasters benefit from satellite data and extensive transatlantic observations, during WWII there were only a handful of ships, submarines, and aircraft providing information on Atlantic weather systems.
The week before D-Day was marked by an unprecedented spell of hot weather in May, followed by a severe storm system approaching the Normandy coast, with another storm trailing close behind. This created highly uncertain conditions that complicated the forecasting effort. Professor Ed Hawkins, also from the University of Reading, explains that three forecasting teams worked independently but contributed to Stagg’s final assessment. The forecasts initially diverged on whether June 5 would offer safe landing conditions, leading Stagg to advise a postponement. However, by the evening of June 4, a consensus emerged indicating a narrow window of relatively calm weather on June 6, prompting Eisenhower to proceed with the invasion.
Behind the scenes, the meteorologists faced personal as well as professional challenges; Stagg himself was away from his pregnant wife while making a decision that would affect over 160,000 Allied troops. The film’s depiction highlights their critical but often overlooked role in the operation’s success. Burt and his colleagues note that even modern forecasting models, including those based on artificial intelligence, struggle to replicate the accuracy given the sparse data available in 1944.
The accuracy of the film’s historical weather portrayal benefited from extensive archival research. Catherine Ross, an archivist with the Met Office, said filmmakers were provided with exact replicas of wartime weather charts and communication logs. The Allied meteorologists had some advantages, including access to weather data from the United Kingdom, the Atlantic, and, crucially, intercepted German weather reports obtained through codebreaking efforts at Bletchley Park. German forecasters, although aware of the storms, were reportedly unaware of the brief lull that provided the window for the invasion.
This weather forecast remains one of the most significant in history, playing a pivotal role in the success of the Normandy landings, and the film offers a fresh perspective on a lesser-known aspect of the D-Day narrative.
